| As the days shorten and water temp begins
to drop, the action begins to heat up. The area between the Huron river and
Vermilion river has been nick-named the bowl, by yours truly. One of the
reasons for this name is that it is a natural, bait fish attractor with gradual
depth contours and adequate structure. And, if there is one thing I think I
know about walleye, it is that when you find the bait fish ..... you will find
the walleye. As the water temperatures cools, the bait fish will move into the
warmer and shallower water. The "bowl" provides the perfect
conditions for the bait fish, as well as a rocky shoreline for ambushing
walleye. |
| However, fall fishing does present a
double-edged sword. As these fall fish feed and pack on the pounds at the bait
fish buffet, the average size increases...... as does the competition between
bait fish and lures in the water. Stick baits such as Reef Runners, Renosky's
and Husky Jerks are the lures of choice with each presenting a different
profile and action. This time of year I actually prefer afternoon trips with
some of the best action occuring at, or near, near dusk. Nothing can match the
beauty of a Lake Erie sunset and while watching the planer boards take-off, the
rod bending and the drag singing on the reel ! |
